Matthew is a Fellow of St Edmund’s College, Cambridge, and of Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, where he lectures on trusts and equity, and public law. Before his pupillage, he served as Director of Studies of Law at both Colleges, and his various academic works have been published in leading journals.
Alongside his academic career, Matthew was admitted to legal practice in Australia in 2017, and worked as an Associate in the disputes team of the international firm Allen’s-Linklaters. There, he advised on a wide range of commercial disputes, including professional negligence, insurance and civil fraud claims, and regulatory investigations, acting for both private actors and government. In a pro bono capacity, he advised in a series of high-profile constitutional disputes concerning democratic rights and offshore refugee detention. In 2018, he served as Judicial Assistant to the Chief Judge of the Commercial Court in the Supreme Court of Victoria, Australia.
With a background in commercial litigation and an extensive record in public law research, Matthew is interested in the points of intersection between government and business.
He holds a PhD from Cambridge, where he was the WM Tapp Scholar at Gonville & Caius College, an LLM from Cambridge (First Class), and a BA and JD from the University of Melbourne (First Class).
