Lionel Nichols is a leading junior specialising in international and cross-border disputes, with a practice spanning commercial litigation, international arbitration and public international law, including jurisdiction and conflict-of-laws issues. He is regularly instructed in high-value, complex matters for States, corporations and individuals before English courts and international tribunals.

Lionel initially qualified as a solicitor in Australia in 2008, practising in commercial litigation at an international law firm in the UK and becoming a partner before transferring to the English Bar in 2013, and brings a solicitor’s collaborative and commercial perspective.

Lionel graduated with a triple first (Law, Politics, and Philosophy) and a Master of International Politics from the University of Tasmania before being awarded a Rhodes scholarship to study at the University of Oxford where he graduated with a Bachelor of Civil Law, a Master of International Politics and a Doctor of Philosophy in Law.

Lionel also sits as an arbitrator and is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators.

Areas of expertise

Lionel has a broad international arbitration practice encompassing complex, high-value commercial disputes across multiple areas, including financial services, energy, insurance, shipping and civil fraud. His work frequently involves cross-border disputes with parallel proceedings, and he is experienced both as part of counsel teams and as sole counsel.

He is regularly instructed in arbitrations seated in major arbitral centres worldwide, including proceedings under the CIArb, HKIAC, ICC, ICSID, LCIA, SCC, SIAC and UNCITRAL Rules, as well as ad hoc arbitrations. His practice covers banking & financial services, commodities and international trade, and energy & infrastructure, with a focus on Africa, CIS & Russia, and offshore jurisdictions. He has also advised claimants and States in relation to potential claims under bilateral and multilateral investment treaties.

His experience spans the full lifecycle of disputes, from pre-arbitration strategy and pleadings through to evidential hearings and post-award challenges and enforcement. His clients include multinational corporations, financial institutions and high-net-worth individuals, and he is accustomed to working on large-scale disputes involving complex factual and legal issues.

Alongside his arbitration practice, he has significant experience of arbitration-related litigation before the English courts, including challenges to awards, applications for interim relief and enforcement proceedings. He has particular expertise in applications under the Arbitration Act 1996, including challenges under sections 67, 68 and 69, stays of proceedings under section 9, freezing injunctions under section 44 and determinations of jurisdiction under section 32

LCIA Arbitration. Representing the claimant in a $1.3 billion claim in the logistics sector, with related proceedings in the BVI courts and the English courts concerning allegations of unlawful means conspiracy.
LCIA Arbitration. Representing the respondent in a €200m LCIA arbitration in the energy sector, defending contractual and tortious claims brought by Russian State-owned bank VTB.
ICSID Arbitration. Counsel for the claimant, a multinational producer of fibreglass pipes, in an ICSID arbitration under the Egypt-Netherlands BIT.
LCIA Arbitration and SCC Arbitration. Representing a UK respondent in a sale of goods arbitration commenced by a Latvian company which raised complex issues concerning compliance with the Russian sanctions regime.

LCIA Arbitration. Obtaining final anti-suit injunctive relief, restraining proceedings brought in Cyprus by the respondent, in breach of an arbitration clause in a shareholders’ agreement.
ICC Arbitration. Counsel for a global investment bank in a shareholders’ dispute against a Polish real estate company regarding the exercise of put options.
ICC Arbitration. A claim by a multi-national energy company concerning breaches of a suite of supply agreements, including issues of force majeure.

Kanametova v OSG. Challenge under s 67 of the Arbitration Act to an arbitral award issued by a sole arbitrator under the LCIA Rules declining jurisdiction on the basis that a contract containing the arbitration agreement had been fraudulently and dishonestly backdated.
GPF GP S.á.r.l v Poland. Successfully represented the applicant in the first set aside of an investor-State award by an English court under s 67 of the Arbitration Act.
NDK Ltd v Huo Holding Ltd. Resisting challenges to four arbitral awards under sections 67 and 68 of the Arbitration Act.
Reliance Industries v Union of India. Representing India in successfully resisting eight challenges (under sections 67, 68 and 69 of the Arbitration Act) to a $3 billion, 700-page UNCITRAL award.
Union of India v Reliance Industries. Representing India in commencing five challenges (and resisting a further three challenges) under sections 67, 68 and 69 of the Arbitration Act.
Specialty Magnetics Ltd v Agilent Technologies [2020] EWHC 2193 (Comm). Resisting a stay application under section 9 of the Arbitration Act.
VTB Commodities Trading DAC v JSC Antipinsky Refinery. Application under section 32 of the Arbitration Act to determine a preliminary issue of jurisdiction.
VTB Commodities Trading DAC v JSC Antipinsky Refinery. Resisting the continuation of a mandatory interlocutory injunction made in support of arbitration under section 44 of the Arbitration Act.

Family Shareholder. Representing the first defendant in an eight-figure shareholder and breach of directors’ duty dispute in the Commercial Court.
Dutch company. A claim by a Dutch investor seeking to recover more than £70 million invested to support group claims. This multi-jurisdictional dispute involves complex issues regarding the law of assignment, champerty & maintenance, financial services law and consumer protection law.
High-net-worth individual. An eight-figure professional negligence claim against former solicitors.
High-net-worth individual. Complex jurisdictional dispute in the Commercial Court concerning alleged breaches of fiduciary and directors’ duties and raising matters of issue estoppel, abuse of process, limitation and forum non conveniens.
His Majesty’s Government. An eight-figure claim by a government department against a professional services and business consulting corporation for breaches of a master services agreement.
ING v PJSC Rosbank. Defending English anti-suit injunction proceedings arising from the defendant’s commencement of proceedings in Russia in alleged breach of an arbitration agreement.
Galkin v Semchenkova. Defending contract, misrepresentation and unjust enrichment claims concerning an international money transfer business.
Mars v Incom. Defending a seven-figure claim arising from the largest food recall in EU history.
Sputnik v Dassault Aviation. A seven-figure aviation claim involving disputes over UK and EU sanctions.
Fishman v Grebnev and Mangazeev. Representing a Part 20 defendant in an eight-figure dispute between Israeli, British and Russian businessmen concerning a mobile maps and navigation service with 60 million users worldwide.
Tecnomarine v Seawind. A seven-figure claim by a UK company against an Australian company for unpaid commissions and loss of profits from wrongful termination of a distribution agreement in the luxury sporting goods sector.

Lionel is one of London’s most experienced juniors in public international law. His broad practice covers all aspects of public international law for individuals, NGOs and States, including:

On 1 January 2026, Lionel was appointed to the Attorney General’s ‘B’ Panel for Public International Law for a five-year term.

Lionel was Geoffrey Robertson KC’s first-choice junior on all aspects of public international law. In addition to casework, Lionel provided research assistance on numerous academic titles, including Crimes against Humanity, The Case of the Pope, An Inconvenient Genocide, Mullahs Without Mercy and Who Owns History?

He holds two master’s degrees in international law, a master’s degree in international relations, and a doctorate in international law which was examined by Professor Dapo Akande. Prior to joining Chambers, Lionel was the Global Justice Research Fellow at the University of Oxford. He has published widely in the field of public international law and is regularly invited to speak at conferences. He is the author of The International Criminal Court and the End of Impunity in Kenya.

Lionel advises the Norfolk Island Government in its attempts to obtain the status of a non-self-governing territory under Chapter XI of the United Nations Charter.

Buffett v Australia. Application regarding the rights of Norfolk Islands to self-determination, indigenous rights, minority rights, the right to vote, the right to freedom of expression and the right to health.
Marshall v Australia; George v Australia. Application on behalf of the “Stranded Aussies” who were prevented by the Australian government from returning to their home country due to COVID-19 policies.
Tsvetnenko v Australia. Habeas corpus application regarding an Australian court’s refusal to grant bail to a defendant awaiting extradition.

International Criminal Law

Prosecutor v Taylor. The “Blood Diamond” trial of the president of Liberia, convicted of 11 counts of aiding and abetting war crimes and crimes against humanity, and sentenced to 50 years imprisonment by the Special Court for Sierra Leone.
Prosecutor v Karadžić. Trial of the president of the Republika Srpska, convicted by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity, and sentenced to 40 years imprisonment.
Prosecutor v Stanišić and Simatović. Trial of the head and deputy head of the Serbian State Security Service, convicted of war crimes and sentenced by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia to 12 years imprisonment.
Prosecutor v Gotovina. Trial of three defendants, including the commander of the Croatian army, for nine counts of war crimes and crimes against humanity alleged to have been committed during Operation Storm.
Public International Law Policy Group. Advice on genocide and crimes against humanity concerning the mass displacement and persecution of the Rohingya in Burma.
Public International Law Policy Group. Advice on the legality of the detention of suspected ISIS fighters in Iraq under public international law, including Common Article 3 to the Geneva Conventions.
Global Campaign for the Prevention of Aggression. Advice to this private organisation established by Benjamin Ferencz on various matters concerning Article 2(4) of the UN Charter and the crime of aggression under the Rome Statute.
Reprieve. Advice on international humanitarian law issues arising from the “War on Terrorism”.
The International Criminal Court and the End of Impunity in Kenya. Author of a monograph on the ICC’s attempts to prosecute the former president and the former prime minister of Kenya for crimes against humanity arising out of Kenya’s 2008 post-election violence.

Chagos Islanders v United Kingdom. Advising on an application that raised issues over indigenous rights, minority rights and decolonisation.
Hutchinson v United Kingdom. Application under Article 3 of the European Convention on Human Rights (prohibition of torture) concerning the imposition of “whole life” sentences.

African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights

Tuweni v Kenya. The first extraordinary rendition case to be heard by the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights, with associated claims relating to torture, fair trial, liberty, discrimination and the right to family life.
Amnesty International. Advice on a potential application to the African Commission on Human & Peoples’ Rights concerning enforced disappearances in Burundi.

Litvinenko v SSHD. Judicial review of the Secretary of State’s refusal to set up a statutory inquiry into the death of Russian spy Alexander Litvinenko, with reference to the United Kingdom’s positive obligations under Article 2 of the European Convention of Human Rights to protect and promote the right to life.

Lionel has experience in company and insolvency litigation, particularly matters with an international or offshore dimension, and is regularly instructed to appear in the Insolvency & Companies Court.

His work includes corporate and personal insolvency, including administration, bankruptcy, liquidation, winding-up petitions and applications to set aside statutory demands, as well as shareholder disputes, unfair prejudice petitions, derivative claims, litigation arising from corporate transactions, corporate governance and directors’ duties.
