John practices across chambers’ key areas of work, specialising in professional negligence, commercial litigation, insurance, arbitration, and costs law.
John acts for claimants and defendants in a wide array of professional negligence, commercial, insurance and costs disputes. This includes:
John is a member of the Middle Temple and received a Queen Mother Scholarship from the Inn. He was also awarded a Harmsworth Entrance Exhibition and a BPTC Excellence Award during his studies.
Before coming to the bar, John graduated with a first in Law from University College London, following a degree in Classical Archaeology and Ancient History at the University of Oxford. He went on to read for the Bachelor of Civil Law at Oxford, graduating with one of the highest Distinctions in his year.
Prior to pupillage, John spent a year at the Law Commission, where he was involved in preparing the Commission’s proposed reforms to the Bills of Sale Acts. John is also on the Steering Committee of the Northern Legal History Group.

Litigation and Advisory Work
John has acted in a range of commercial disputes:
John also regularly advises on the merits of potential claims or other legal and procedural issues. Recent instructions have included providing legal strategic advice to a large multi-national following a serious IT systems failure, and advising on service and enforcement issues in ongoing proceedings.
John has also acted on a range of claims raising issues of conspiracy, breach of trust, breach of fiduciary duty, dishonesty and fraud. This includes acting in claims arising out of fraudulent misappropriations, claims tainted by illegality, and acting on an application concerning the ‘iniquity’ exception to privilege.

John welcomes instructions in domestic and international commercial arbitrations. John’s instructions and experience includes:
John has also worked as an assistant to the Tribunal in several large commercial arbitrations.
Training and Publications
John has delivered talks and training on key issues in commercial litigation, including limitation, settlement strategy, and the enforceability of exclusion clauses. John has also published articles on the company law principle of quasi-partnership, and claims for loss of a chance (published on Lexology).
John acts and advises across a range of insurance law disputes. His recent work has included:
John has also written on avoiding policies for material non-disclosure, and the application of Part 2 of the Insurance Act 2015 (published on Lexology).
John has acted in a range of international and domestic arbitrations, including:
John has also acted as an assistant to the Tribunal in international commercial arbitrations under the LCIA and UNCITRAL rules.
John is frequently instructed to deal with costs issues, both in litigation and arbitration. John’s recent work has included:
