Prior to taking tenancy, John was called to the bar by the Middle Temple and received a Queen Mother Scholarship. John was also awarded a Harmsworth Entrance Exhibition, and a BPTC Excellence Award.
Before coming to the bar, John graduated with a first in Law from University College London, following a degree in Classical Archaeology and Ancient History at the University of Oxford. He went on to read for the Bachelor of Civil Law at Oxford, graduating with one of the highest Distinctions in his year.
Prior to pupillage, John spent a year at the Law Commission, where he was involved in preparing the Commission’s proposed reforms to the Bills of Sale Acts. John is also on the Steering Committee of the Northern Legal History Group.

John’s work has included acting both for and against professionals in a range of fields: lawyers, auditors, IT consultants, construction professionals, surveyors, insurance brokers, and others. John’s work has included the following:

John is frequently instructed to act in commercial matters. John’s commercial litigation work has included:
John has also advised on and conducted hearings concerning a range of procedural matters in the course of litigation; including disclosure, expert evidence, and privilege (including the ‘iniquity’ exception).
Aside from litigation, John has been instructed in a number of high value arbitrations, both ad hoc and under various institutional rules (see further under the “Insurance”, “Arbitration” and “Costs” tabs).
John has been instructed on a range of matters including disputes concerning policy construction and scope of cover, issues arising under the Insurance Act 2015, and claims against insurers pursuant to the Third Parties (Rights Against Insurers) Act 2010.
Recent work has included acting as junior counsel in high-value and complex multi-party arbitral proceedings on behalf of a consortium of claimant businesses seeking to recover business interruption losses (led by King’s Counsel); following the Supreme Court’s decision in the FCA business interruption test case.
John’s professional negligence work has also included acting for insurance brokers, and in other cases engaging principles of insurance law, and professional indemnity insurance.
John has been instructed to act in arbitral proceedings under both ad hoc and institutional rules (as junior counsel, and unled), and in the bringing of arbitration claims. John’s work has included advising on matters from the pre-action stage (including the construction of arbitration clauses), through to the drafting of statements of case, the conduct of interim hearings (including hearings concerning disclosure and Redfern schedules), final hearings, costs assessments, and appeals.
John’s work has included acting and advising in a number of commercial and insurance arbitrations, both as junior and sole counsel (see the “Commercial Litigation” and “Insurance” tabs above for examples).
John has also had experience of working as an assistant to the Tribunal in several commercial arbitrations.
