Alex has expertise in commercial, public law and professional disciplinary matters. He has a particular focus on financial services law and regulation and regularly appears unled at both substantive and procedural hearings.
Before joining chambers, Alex practised as a solicitor at Allen & Overy LLP (now A&O Shearman) and Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP where he developed a substantial financial services advisory practice representing banks, investment firms and funds. He is a co-editor of Jackson & Powell on Professional Liability (chapters on the regulation of financial services and financial practitioner liability) and the co-author of a chapter on recognised investment exchanges in Financial Markets and Exchanges Law. He regularly presents on financial services matters and is a member of COMBAR and the Financial Services Lawyers Association.
Between September 2020 – August 2021, he served as the judicial assistant to Lord Leggatt JSC and worked on a number of high-profile appeals whilst at the UK Supreme Court including the FCA COVID-19 Business Interruption Test Case [2021] UKSC 1, Manchester Building Society v Grant Thornton [2021] UKSC 20, FS Cairo (Nile Plaza) LLC v Brownlie [2021] UKSC 45 and Lloyd v Google [2021] UKSC 50.

Alex accepts instructions across 4 New Square’s practice areas but has a particular interest in securities litigation and banking and financial services matters (building on his prior experience as a corporate lawyer advising banks, investment firms and asset managers). He regularly delivers training on these topics to firms.
