Philippa Manby

Call: 2010

Pippa became a tenant in October 2011 and is developing a broad civil and commercial practice across all areas of Chambers’ work. During pupillage, she was supervised by Charles Phipps, Rick Liddell, Jonathan Hough and Ben Patten QC. She attended conferences, mediations and court with her supervisors and drafted pleadings, advices and research notes. This provided her with a broad insight into core areas of Chambers’ work, including, professional liability (solicitors, accountants, insurance brokers, IFAs and surveyors), insurance disputes, construction law, civil fraud and sports law. Pippa assisted with the preparation of the Respondent’s case for the appeal to the Supreme Court in Jones v Kaney [2011] UKSC 13 (the case which abolished expert witness immunity from suit).

In her own practice, Pippa undertakes written and court work in the High Court and county courts. Alongside professional liability, she has experience of claims involving lenders and landlords, land registration, forfeiture of leases, the supply of goods and services, property damage, invoice disputes and consumer credit agreements.

Before commencing pupillage, Pippa read Ancient and Modern History at Worcester College, Oxford where she was a scholar. She then took a year out working in the Gambia for the Institute for Human Rights and Development in Africa, an NGO bringing cases before the African Commission on Human Rights. Pippa studied for the law conversion course at City University where she obtained a Distinction and was a finalist in the internal mooting competition judged by Lord Hoffmann. She has since judged City University moots. Pippa was graded Outstanding on the BVC winning a Buchanan Prize from Lincoln’s Inn. Lincoln’s Inn has also awarded her Hardwicke, Lord Denning and Levitt Scholarships.
