During his legal studies Richard came top in his year at Bar School in Advocacy (Submissions), was in the final of the Lincoln's Inn advocacy competition and successfully mooted against Oxford University. He also won the Lord Mansfield scholarship, as well as the Hardwicke, CPE and pupillage scholarships.
Richard's practice contains a mixture of regular advocacy in the High Court and county courts and advisory and drafting work. He has particular experience and interest in professional liability, public law and commercial law (including construction, property and insolvency). He is a member of the Attorney-General's Panel of Approved Counsel (C-Panel) and has been instructed by Treasury Solicitors as a junior in two high-value property fraud cases. He also carried out research for an appeal to the House of Lords in the case of Bradford & Bingley v Rashid [2006] UKHL 37, in which Justin Fenwick QC and Nicole Sandells appeared for the successful appellant. More detail on Richard’s practice can be found by following the links in “Areas of Practice” above.
Richard has also contributed to the latest edition of Jackson & Powell on Professional Liability (6th ed.) and to Insurance Law for the Construction Industry (OUP, 2008) and regularly gives talks to solicitors on topics relating to his areas of practice.
In addition to his regular practice, Richard also spent a term in the Court of Appeal as the Judicial Assistant to the Master of the Rolls. Through this he gained insight into the way judges think about their cases and experience of advocacy at the highest level.
Richard combines forceful written and oral advocacy with a common-sense approach to the risks of litigation. He puts a particular emphasis on providing a professional but friendly service for his clients.
