Profile

Miles is a specialist in professional liability, insurance and commercial litigation.

 

In his professional liability work Miles has represented both Claimants and Defendants in matters involving solicitors, barristers, licensed conveyancers, surveyors, insurance brokers, financial advisers, accountants, auditors and architects. He has represented both solicitors and barristers in successfully opposing wasted costs applications and in particular was instructed on behalf of the successful barrister applicant in R (on the application of AB) v X Crown Court [2009] PNLR 30 when the Administrative Court quashed a trial judge’s refusal to recuse himself from hearing a wasted costs application on the grounds of apparent bias. Miles also has experience of disciplinary matters having represented the respondent in disciplinary proceedings brought by the National Association of Estate Agents and the Association of Sign Language Interpreters.

 

Miles has acted for and advised insurers covering a range of risks and has experienced an extended secondment in a city firm’s insurance department. He has particular experience of insurance issues arising from professional liability policies and advised frequently on issues arising from the Minimum Terms and Conditions for solicitors.

 

Miles has advised and represented parties in a numerous commercial disputes involving sale of goods and supply of services, mortgages, credit agreements and guarantees. He has particular experience of representing lenders and financial institutions.

 

 

Education

 

After reading Anglo-Saxon, Norse & Celtic at Trinity College, Cambridge University Miles spent a year teaching History before converting to law at City University. 

 

A member of Gray’s Inn, he received the David Karmel and William Shaw Awards for his CPE and Bar School years respectively. During pupillage he was supervised by Graeme McPherson QC, Ben Hubble QC and Charles Phipps.  

 

Publications and Seminars

Miles has written a number of articles on issues of importance in professional liability and insurance law and has been published in the Journal of Professional Negligence, the New Law Journal, Insurance Law Monthly and the Sweet & Maxwell Civil Procedure Rule Reports. He has also provided solicitors’ liability training to the claims handling unit of a leading firm of solicitors and lectured on a number of different topics including the SRA Code of Conduct and the effect of Quinn v The Law Society [2009] EWHC 2588 (Ch) upon the understanding and practicalities of legal professional privilege.
