Profile
Jalil’s practice is largely based in the areas of professional liability, product liability and insurance. He has been recommended as a leading junior by Chambers & Partners and the Legal 500 for many years. He has a maths and sciences background, which gives him a real advantage when dealing with financially, scientifically or technically complex cases.
Jalil is often instructed in cases concerning lawyers’ or accountants’ liabilities. He acts in a wide range of claims against solicitors or barristers, for example, from mishandling of commercial transactions, property and wills, through lost litigation, to wasted costs applications. Jalil has particular experience of limitation and procedural issues, and is well used to dealing with difficult litigants in person. In relation to accountants, Jalil has acted in claims arising out of management advice, tax and VAT advice and audit work. Jalil has significant experience of cases involving allegations of dishonesty against professionals, and also resulting coverage issues.
Product safety and product liability work is an important feature of Jalil’s practice. As well as acting in many stand-alone claims, he has been heavily involved in a number of major group actions, including the HIV Haemophiliacs, benzodiazepine, Hepatitis C, fetal anti-convulsant (sodium valproate), MMR, Trilucent (silicon breast implant), 3M Capital hip replacement, Centrepulse, Bio-Alcamid, Zyprexa and Parkinson’s disease litigations.
Major insurers regularly instruct Jalil in high value or catastrophic accident claims and loss recovery claims, and he also advises on coverage issues. He has recently acted on behalf of a number of institutional claimants in the Buncefield litigation.
Jalil is involved in commercial litigation involving the supply of goods or services. Jalil also has useful experience of cases involving land and trusts, and acted for the successful defendant in the first case on the construction of the Trusts of Land and Trustees Act 1996.
With the increasing costs consciousness of insurers and institutional litigants, many of the cases in which Jalil is instructed are now resolved by mediation. Jalil is regularly instructed to attend mediations on behalf of clients and is equally to happy to assist with preparation before mediation.
Jalil has been an editor of the Professional Negligence & Liability Reports since their inception in 1996. He was a contributing editor to Jackson & Powell Professional Liability Precedents (Sweet & Maxwell). He has contributed chapters concerning product safety and product liability to The Law of Medicines (OUP) and Clinical Negligence (APIL).
Jalil is a member of the Bar Council, and has been an active member of Lincoln’s Inn and specialist Bar Associations for many years. His special interest in professional standards is reflected in his past memberships of Lord Alexander’s Standards Review Body and the Bar’s Professional Conduct and Complaints Committee. He sits as a Recorder in the Crown and County Courts.
